Brenderup, International Horse Trailer from Texas and Denmark, 27 Years

Towing with Toyota's Review

These days we all want better fuel mileage towing our trailers. Even if fuel prices go down, we know they'll go back up. Brenderup is the easiest towing horse trailer I've found. Designed to be towed with cars in Europe safely. Brenderup is a remarkable horse trailer, with the chassis coming from Denmark and the walls and roof made in Texas.

Rule of thumb, if the vehicle is designed to use a class III receiver hitch, it will tow a Brenderup. With less than 4% tongue weight as required in Europe, the balanced horse load and light tongue weight didn't squat the Toyota 4Runner or Tacoma I towed the largest Brenderup, the Baron. We've reviewed the Brenderup before,
Read... now we're checking out how they are put together.

Yes it's more expensive than a steel trailer, but in the same range as an aluminum trailer and will last as long. No painting or welding done in Texas when the walls and roof are attached to the chassis.

I drove a 2008 Toyota 4Runner to Midland Texas to see how Brenderups are assembled. And I wanted to tow a Baron back to Colorado with the 4Runner which is midsize SUV.

The 4Runner did 21 mpg from Colorado to Texas empty, coming back towing the new 12 inch longer Baron Brenderup, the 4Runner did 14.2 mpg. Traveling at 70 mph, the tachometer ran 2050 rpm without trailer. Towing the Brenderup the tachometer showed 2200 at 70 mph. I tried to make the Brenderup sway on the way home from Texas, like you might if you wanted to check the trailer tires. The Brenderup Baron corrected the sway in one movement, most torsion axle trailers will take 3 side to side actions to correct straight and a shackle leaf spring suspension may not quit swaying until you stop

Open, inviting, well lit from the front window and white interior. I like the front window, horses load easier with the tall ceiling and window, telling your horse he's not walking into a cave.

Stall width is 31" similar to slant loads, long slant stalls. Escape doors are low, so the horse doesn't.

Chest bar is set for shortest horse, 3 adjustments. Butt bar has 6 different positions for fitting a 12 hand horse to 17 and larger. You don't have to custom order a Brenderup to fit a large horse. I've loaded 17.3 hand Quarter horses in a Baron with no trouble. Very versatile.

Two mats so they are easy to remove and clean floor,  50 lbs each, what does your mats weigh?

New, door edges are framed in aluminum, nice look. (picture right)

This is what comes in the sea container from Denmark, 21 chassis in a container lands in Houston port. The axles, floor, frame, ramps, hitch, coupler, brakes etc.

Galvanized floor frame, tongue, and side posts, axles are galvanized too.

Chris Barr, the big cheese with Brenderup, goes over assembly schedule with Jay Martin production manager.

Four models, Baron, Royal, Prestige and Solo. Baron the largest 2 horse accounts for 50% sales. Different color walls is an option,  LED lights started in 2008. I want a pink Brenderup.

Why wouldn't you tow your horse trailer through Starbuck's?

Brenderup trailers are tested by TUV to pass German government national standards. To be on the road in Europe, trailers have to pass tests. Not a cone test, but durability and safety.

Fiberglass resign roofs are made in Texas. Chris Barr has production control for the US trailers, heavier built for the US market. Chris uses composite walls like your counter top in your kitchen which is very durable and strong. Made with Formica, Solid Phoenlic Resin (SPR) 15 mm, 5/8" thick. I've beat on sections of the walls with a sledge hammer, I don't think a horse could kick a hole in it. The walls of the European trailers sold in Europe are fiberglass. SPR is cooler, put your hand on a Brenderup wall and an aluminum wall on another trailer. Sikaflex bonding is the sealant used on Brenderups, commonly used on boats. Pictures right, aluminum extrusion attaches the fiberglass roof to the SPR wall.

Torsion axles with shocks, does your trailer have shocks? Your truck does, this is why a Brenderup doesn't bounce when it's empty and your horse's legs don't have to do the work of a shock absorber.

A complete suspension, smooth ride, empty and loaded.

Rain tires roll straight in bad weather.

I'm predicting other trailer manufactures will start offering shocks. Brenderup is a unique trailer with advanced features. 27 years here, I would call them tested and proven. A veteran in the industry.

Axle Spindles, Find me one Larger

Overbuilt suspension, are your axle spindles 2 inches thick and replaceable? The torsion axle spindle nut is torqued at 240 lbs. That takes a big wrench

Two inch spindle, massive bearings.

Perm packed bearings just like your car. I've looked at car wheel bearings with more than 100k and they showed little wear. Standard trailers can be over greased in the axle factory and the trailer factory and then greased again by the owner and now the brakes are packed in grease and they don't work, not on a Brenderup.

In Europe, trailers are required to have self contained and activated brakes. Brenderup brakes are self actuated and have a parking brake. More details in my original review,

Ramps with traction ribs. Longer than the average ramp, your horse can have all four hoofs on at once. The rear of the trailer has jacks to stabilize the trailer. Good for training your horse to ramps.

Americans working hard building Brenderups in Texas. Formica (Solid Pfenal Resin) SPR, makes a strong light cool wall.
On Baron model, roof and nose are one piece. No welding, no painting

Brake rod in the middle pulls the cables to the brakes. It's a mechanical surge brake with parking brake. All self contained and activated. You don't need a trailer brake controller,

Simon Barr (left) and Chris keep the phone calls answered. You can always call and talk to the boss.

Prestige model has one piece fiberglass roof with a SPR nose.

Plastic fender option

Toyota 4Runner Sport Edition with 4.0L V-6 and 5-speed automatic, was a perfect match for towing the Baron Brenderup from Texas to Colorado. Don't they look sharp together? I like the Sport Editions hood scoop, reminds me of high school. Rated a little better than the Tacoma for fuel mileage, 16 mpg city and 20 highway. Brenderup lets you keep your SUV that your want and still afford to take your horses to the trail and forget about the recession thing for a while. Horses do that, make you smile !

Not to be outdone on bling, Brenderup comes with a locking coupler, built in park brake, ball sock, horse ties and more. In the previous review we covered the self contained brake system and the unique story of Brenderup, Read...

Brenderup, hay hauler, ATV hauler, motorcycle hauler, golf cart hauler, even all your horse sizes.

Toyota Tacoma V6, a quality tight body, tows baron well, 2000 rpm doesn't lug at 70 mph, 2500 rpm with hay load. stays in power band for good acceleration, my pick for small truck. The Tacoma handled the largest Brenderup Baron with flying colors. With Tacoma factory mirrors I can see past the Brenderup, the bodies match, trailer brakes are great on the Baron

Hauling hay with the Baron model, 36 bales with divider still in 16x34 inch Colorado bales, 11 bales on the Tacoma,  2384 #'s total, similar to towing a couple horses and tack.

Tacoma Double Cab SR5 4x4 with 4.0L V-6 and manual 6 speed, needed lower gears in 1st to start under load. Better trailer towing choice with and automatic transmission.

News for 2009 Our 27th YEAR in North America

“ONE SIZE FITS ALL” Ya! Right!! Yes, that’s right; if carefully engineered, “A ONE SIZE TRAILER CAN FIT ALL”

The BARON”L” two horse trailer now has not 3 but 6 different butt bars positions to keep your horse up to the chest bar (chest bar has 3 height adjustments) for a balanced ride. Carry any combination of two horses: from –12Hd. to 17+Hd. in the same trailer. “ONE SIZE FITS ALL” yes it does!

What does this mean to you?
If you have 17+Hd. Horses it means SUBSTANTIAL SAVING$$$$$$$. Only BRENDERUP offers a trailer designed for two 17+ Hd. Horses for less than $16,000.00! You get 65inches measured forward from the chest bar to comfortably accommodate that long neck and big head which allows the biggest horse the luxury of relaxing. No more struggling to stand still when turning, accelerating, braking the trailer? Arrive at your destination ready to go. No more time to recover from the journey, saving time and temper!

We think it’s about time owners of big horses caught a break. When your local trailer store boasts “a custom made trailer for your big horses”, they really mean, “ let us charge you more money since you need a special trailer for your big horses”. So much for the advertised great trailer prices if, when your get there, your horses will not fit?
Go for a BARON L knowing your horse will fit and the price is right. You don’t need a pick-up truck; Your carbon foot print shrinks: You can operate this trailer by yourself. Best of all: the RESALE PRICE is high because it’s never too big for even the smallest horses?
82% of domestic and 50% of all import vehicles will tow a BRENDERUP. You know the trailer you need; a BARON L. Now you can choose your tow vehicle. So you are always in the drivers seat when you pick a BRENDERUP horse Trailer. Isn’t that better than being told you have to buy a pick up truck so you can be told which model trailer you have buy! A BARON L needs a class III towing hitch and round 7 light plug.

BRENDERUP;the only HYBRID COMPATIBLE HORSE TRAILER. For 26 years BRENDERUP has been all about PERFORMANCE.

The FREEDOM of REAL CHOICE is yours.

Fuel prices getting you down?
BRENDERUP will lift you up!

Gas /diesel @$4/5.00 a gallon is just a wake up call. Much of the world is paying $9/12.00 a gallon and life does go on BECAUSE people have adapted? They use a BRENDERUP..

Choice is freedom; Freedom is choice.

Our competitors think that the " choice" of any full sized tow truck, is enough ? One trailer: 2 horses: 8 cylinders:12 miles a gallon = a black smudge of carbon foot print the size of Bigfoot and a thirst for fossel fuel that won't quit.

Its an addiction that you are ready to get off NOW and we can help. One trailer: 2 horses: 4 or 6 cyliners ; 22 miles a gallon = BRENDERUP;half the foot print; half the fuel consumption . Over the next 5 years anyone who does not get a BRENDERUP is going to pay for one in higher running costs anyway

A TRUCK: $5:00 diesel for 15,000miles X 5 years = $31,250.00 in fuel.
A CROSSOVER: $4.50 gas for 15,000miles X 5 years = $15,340.00 in fuel.
THAT'S A savings of $15,910.00 which is enough to BUY A BRENDERUP?

For the first time ever, the Auto industry is really helping; Cutting back production of full sized trucks and SUV due to a lack of demand. Expanding the choice of Crossover vehicles; already there are 45 different nameplates being pumped out at 2.3M a year and more in the works about to come to market;

Chevy Traverse
Dodge Journey
Ford Flex.

Right now the top 10 Crossover name plates, which account for 50% of the market sector, have one thing in common ALL will tow a BRENDERUP with a class III hitch:
#1 biggest seller; Honda CRV
#2 Ford Escape
#3 Toyota RAV4
#4 Ford Edge
#5 Toyota Highlander
#6 Honda Pilot
#7 Nissan Murano
#8 Saturn Vue
#9 Lexus RX
#10 Chevy Equinox
plus 35 others

BRENDERUP is the only European designed horse trailer to be built, in the US for the US.  For more than 20 years this remarkable line of one and two horse bumper pull trailers have blended the refinement of European engineering with the durability of American materials.

The AMERICAN CONTRIBUTION to these unique trailers (the Baron Series even has a full US Patent to prove it #5,490,705) includes an adjustable dressing room in the front of an otherwise standard length trailer (Baron SL models).  Walls individually constructed from Solid Phenol Resin panels (produced exclusively for Brenderup in the US) to withstand the worst punishment from both inside the trailer and from outside sources: immune from ravages of heat/humidity while always ensuring the trailer is effectively cool regardless of the outside temperature.  Individually hand made, one piece, graded fiberglass roof for, maximum cooling in the SUMMER heat, insulation from the coldest WINTER, shaped to guarantee the smoothest passage through the air for peak towing efficiency.

The EUROPEAN CONTRIBUTION. An INERTIA® brake system which is speed and load sensitive, anti lock and the simplest maintenance, providing just the right amount of brake every time regardless of the load.  Maintenance free wheel bearings never need repacking.  A reactionary independent torsion suspension automatically adjusts itself to the weight of your horse/horses so they are never over sprung and always enjoy a smooth ride.  Flexible, removable stall divider with adjustable height Chest / Butt Bars, encourages the most stubborn horse to load. Rear prop stands to hold the trailer rock steady as those really big horses get on and off the trailer.

INSIDE TRAILER SPACE

HEAD ROOM - Possibly the most important feature in a horse trailer and certainly the most overlooked. When selecting a suitable two horse trailer for your horses keep the following measurements in mind:

Stall length: from the chest bar back; you do not need more than 78 inches in which to contain the very biggest horse PROVIDED the clear head room measured directly forward from the chest bar is at least 50 inches. (78" + 50" = 128 inches total length)

There are a lot of trailers marketed today with 90 inch stalls but only 38 inches of head room. This gives the appearance of offering bigger stalls, but with only 38 inches of headroom a big horse may have its chest up to 12 inches away from the chest bar and insufficient room forward of the chest bar to raise and lower its head. This is needed to keep its balance in a traveling trailer and to lower its head at regular intervals to clear its sinus. For horses 17+Hds. these trailers provide TOO MUCH stall length and TOO LITTLE head room. (90" + 38" = 128 inches total length)

Since the majority of horses are 14+ to 16+ Hds. even a 78 inch stall is longer than necessary for them. All BRENDERUP trailers offer 40 to 65 inches forward of the chest bar (to accommodate every sized horse) and individually adjustable Chest and Butt bar heights to accommodate most every horse without disturbing the head room which is so critical for the horses safety and comfort.

CHASSIS DESIGN

BRENDERUP chassis design limits the amount of weight the trailer puts on the tow vehicle. This makes the required wheel-base-length (of the tow vehicle) unimportant thereby allowing you the freedom to choose from a very wide range of suitable vehicles. You are no longer limited to a big truck when trailering a couple of big horses.

AERODYNAMICS: It is the vacuum which builds up behind the trailer, particularly at speeds over 44.6 mph, which causes "OTHER TRAILERS" to sway in cross winds and when passed by high sided vehicles, the horses are unbalanced and start to stress. You and your tow vehicle probably do the same! The constant drag of this vacuum requires a big high torque powerful engine to pull the trailer out of its own vacuum. In attempting to minimize the effects of this swaying, "OTHER TRAILERS" are built with a heavy tongue weight (500 to 750 lbs. pushing down on the trailer hitch) to help stabilize the trailer. This in turn requires that the tow vehicle have a heavy frame and long wheel-base (the distance between the front and rear axle) to support this weight.

BRENDERUP eliminates most of that vacuum by sloping in the rear of the trailer and exaggerating the roof line. This removes much of the sway and therefore almost all of the stress on you and your horses. This lets you safely achieve your desired trailering speed with less engine power and a lighter vehicle.

Choose a BRENDERUP for its engineered ability to carry two horses of ANY SIZE with ease and comfort, while you continue to drive the vehicles which best suit your lifestyle.

For "OTHER TRAILERS" you must have a high-torque engine and at least 120-inch wheel base - - - THAT MEANS A BIG TRUCK - - - PERIOD!

TOW VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS

For BRENDERUP TRAILERS you need an engine developing a minimum of 120-horse power and a wheel-base as short as 93 inches. The degree by which your current vehicle exceeds these minimums is an indication of its suitability to accommodate a Brenderup. THAT MEANS ANY NUMBER OF SUITABLE TOW VEHICLES ( a big truck is, of course, fine if that is your preference.)

Examples of vehicles that will safely tow and stop a BRENDERUP - - in no particular order.

Mercedes Benz ML Series
Lexus LX 470, RX300
Acura- MDX
Chevrolet- Astro Van, Venture Van, Blazer, S-Series & Tahoe
Dodge- Caravan, Dakota, Durango
Ford- Ranger, Explorer
Honda- Passport, Pilot
Isuzu- Trooper, Axiom, Rodeo
Jeeps- ALL
Land Rovers- ALL
Mazda- MPV Van, B-Series (Most)
Mitsubishi- Montero LS
Nissan- Pathfinder, Quest Van, Xterra
Toyota- 4Runner, Land Cruiser, Highlander
Volvo- XC90, V70
Volkswagen- Touareg
Porsche- Cayenne

This is only a partial list. It does not include any passenger cars, many of which will safely tow and stop a BRENDERUP! Your driving situation and geographical location also play a part in selecting a tow vehicle suitable for your particular trailering. Don't exceed vehicles makers recommendations for tongue load. Take advantage of engine options available and call us any time, We will be pleased to help.

Please remember that WHATEVER you choose to tow your BRENDERUP with, your horses are always guaranteed a smooth, quiet, cool and comfortable ride and you can enjoy the luxury of handling the trailer with ease and by yourself if necessary. BRENDERUP trailering is a blend of INNOVATION and COMMON SENSE and the proof of that is in the pulling.
